Square Interwoven with Flowing Urban Lives
Open Design Competition for Jeonnam Citizen’s Square

광장은 ‘모이다’ 라는 뜻을 가진 ‘아고라’ 에서 그 어원을 알 수 있듯, 민주 시민의 삶을 상징 하는 공간이다. 광장에서는 누구나 자유롭게 모이는 것이 가능하며, 다양한 행사를 열기도 하고, 때로는 무언가를 위한 상징적 공간의 역할을 하기도 한다. 최근의 광장은 그 주변 도시와의 조화가 더욱 중요해 지고 있는데, 이는 광장이 단순히 무언가를 상징하거나 어떠한 목적을 위한 공간만이 아닌, 시민의 일상적 삶을 담아내는 역할도 해야 하기 때문이다. 즉, 광장 공간은 일상의 도시 공간과 반응하며 그 기능을 확장해야만 한다.
전남도민광장은 큰 대로변으로 인해 주변 도시와 공간적, 기능적으로 단절되어 있다. 결과적으로 광장은 도시에서 가장 중요한 장소에 위치해 있으면서도, 마치 하나의 섬처럼 고립되어 버렸다. 시민들은 전남도민광장에 쉽게 접근할 수 없게 되었고, 이곳은 주차의 기능만을 하게 된 거대한 빈 공간이 되었다. 이에 광장의 경계 부분을 주변 도시와 긴밀히 반응하는 조직으로 탈바꿈하고 시민들이 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 휴먼 스케일의 친근한 공간감을 구성함으로써 광장으로의 접근성을 높인다. 기능적으로는 문화적 프로그램인 미술관을 중앙 공원과 전남도민광장에 걸쳐 배치하여 도시와의 연결성을 높이고 광장의 이용성을 높인다. 또한 광장 지하를 활용한 미술관을 계획함으로써 광장 상부 대지 면적을 보존하여 시민을 위한 광장 으로써의 면적 손실을 최소화 한다.
이 제안을 통해 전남도민 광장은 더 이상 고립된 섬이 아닌 주변 도시와 시민의 삶이 하나로 어우러진 장소로 탈바꿈할 것이며, 결국 시민의 일상을 함께하는 광장 그 자체가 전라남도를 상징하는 새로운 랜드 마크가 될 것이다.
The Greek origin of the word square is ‘Agora’, which implies a meaning of `gathering`. In this sense, a square symbolizes democratic civil life. Everyone is free to gather and hold events in a square, and sometimes a square plays a role as a symbolic space for important national or political events. Recently, harmonizing a square with the urban context is more important than before. Such places should not only act as a symbolic or intended space for democratic civil life, but should also provide the stage for normal daily urban lives. In other words, a square should physically respond to its surrounding urban context, and functionally reflect both the public and private lives of a city’s residents.
The Jeonnam Citizen`s Square is spatially and functionally disconnected from the surrounding urban context by a main urban road. As a result, despite it being the most important public place for citizens, the square has become an isolated island. The public cannot easily access the open space, meaning that it has just become an enormous empty space, used for nothing other than parking cars. To address this issue, the boundary of the square should be rewoven with the surrounding context, and the edges of the square should be given a human and more intimate scale in order to increase accessibility for the public. Furthermore, it is proposed that the space beneath the square be used for a cultural program. This would extend functions from the city to the square while keeping the area of the square the same as before.
Through this proposal, the Jeonnam Citizen’s Square will be a space harmonized with its urban context and with people’s daily lives, and no longer just an isolated and empty space. Eventually these Urban lives will flow through the square and it will become a new symbol of Jeollanamdo Province.
