한 페이지 전시는 `오두막‘ 프로젝트를 끝가지 이끌어 가는 과정과 고민을 양재동에 위치한 독립서점 `책방오늘` 한 벽면에 전시하는 프로젝트였다.
의식의 전개.
프로젝트가 끝나면 얻을 수 있는 것은 크게 두 가지 인데, 하나는 완성된 결과물, 그리고 다른 하나는 완성되지 못하고 놓여진 여러 가지 실험과 단상들이다. 보통 후자의 것들을 버려져야 할 휴지조각처럼 취급하기도 하지만, 실은 이루어 지지 않은 단상들이 더 귀하고 소중하다. 그것은 평소에 머리 속에만 가지고 있던 많은 생각들이 프로젝트를 계기로 눈앞에 보여지는 어떤 형태의 결과물로 남음으로써 나의 의식의 체계를 보여주는 실체가 되기 때문인데, 이것들은 바로 다음 작업의 바탕이 된다. 그래서 남겨진 결과물들 하나하나가 실현된 프로젝트만큼 혹은 그 보다 더 소중히 여겨진다.
남겨진 생각들을 복기하다 보면 그것이 순차적이고 논리적인 방식으로 전개되기 보다는, 대부분의 경우 무작위적인 방식으로 흘러간다는 것을 금방 알아채곤 하는데, 이런 의식의 전개가 가지는 가장 중요한 점은 그것이 가지는 결과의 무한성이다. 예컨대 여기저기 흩어져 있는 의식들을 잘 잡아내어 그것들을 나열하고 서로 엮어내면, 그 안에서 나타나는 가능성의 양과 질은 어떤 식으로 번져나가고 발전해 나갈지 예측 할 수가 없다.
스케치.
여러 가지 단상이나 생각을 기록하고 확인하는 방법으로 스케치만큼 좋은 것이 없다. 빠르고 직관적일 뿐 아니라, 그 솜씨에 상관없이 선들이 만들어 내는 메시지는 언제나 매력적이기 때문이다. 스케치를 담아내기 위한 어떠한 형식도 없다. 때론 선만으로 존재하기도 하고, 때론 그 안을 채우는 패턴과 함께, 또 어떨 때에는 그것을 설명하기 위한 텍스트와 함께 있다. 이런 스케치는 프로젝트를 기반으로 하지만, 프로젝트가 끝난 뒤 독립적인 아이디어 자체로도 가치를 가진다. 그것은 그 생각이 가지는 힘을 스케치를 통하여 좀 더 명확하지만 추상적인 형태로 저장할 수 있기 때문일 것이다.
The aim of the ‘one page exhibition’ project was to show the Primitive Hut project in the Onulbooks in Seoul. This exhibition used hand drawn sketches to highlight the ideas underlying the Primitive Hut project, rather than using formal images, drawings or models to focus on the project’s result.
The stream of consciousness
There are two things I obtain from working on projects. The first, of course, is the achieved and realized project itself. The second, however, is the preliminary thoughts and experiments which were not realized or selected as the main concept. Although these are normally considered to be disposable, they can actually be more valuable than the achieved result as they expose invisible ideas and thoughts. These random ideas can reveal the structure of consciousness, and also have the potential to be good materials for future projects.
When I review these materials, which can be understood as a kind of residual consciousness, I find that they flow randomly, rather than in any kind of logical order. This phenomenon is fascinating, because it suggests a limitlessness to their potential; depending on how these random ideas are organised, the quality as well as quantity of their combinations can be explored almost infinitely.
Sketch
Nothing is better than sketching when it comes to giving physical form to ideas. With a few lines and perhaps some hatching, colour or text, we have a tool to explore and record ideas as they arise. Sketching is not only fast and intuitive, but the message conveyed through the lines is also beautiful regardless of whether or not it is skillfully or carefully done. Most importantly, since a sketch reveals the value of a thought or idea in a clear, but also very abstract way, it has value independent of the project it relates to.
