오래된 집을 고친다는 것은 단순히 디자인을 바꾸고 재료를 교체하는 일이 아니다. 새롭게 건축을 고쳐 쓴다는 것은 하나의 건물이 몇 십년을 한곳에 위치해 있으면서 변해가는 주변상황과 어떤 식으로 교감했는지 파악하는 것, 그 건물이 가지는 건축적 가치를 되물어 끄집어 내는 것, 그리고 새롭게 요구되는 또 다른 가치를 올바르게 덧대는 일이다.
수유동집은 1980년대 지어진 전형적인 2층 적벽돌 단독주택이다. 2000년대 중반까지는 주변 여러 단독주택들과 골목을 이루었지만, 지금은 길과 면한 남측을 제외하고는 다른 3면이 모두 다세대 주택 그리고 연립주택과 맞닿아 있다. 결국 주변에 위치한 공동주택의 1층 옥내 주차장과 집이 면하게 되면서 프라이버시 문제가 생겨났으며, 자연스럽게 어느 부분을 열고, 어느 부분을 닫아야 하는지가 중요했다. 또한 1980년대에 설계된 4인가족 기준의 평면은 현재기준으로 그 물리적 한계가 뚜렷했다. 단적으로 북측에 위치한 주방은 이제 2인기준으로 보아도 그 공간이 턱없이 부족하여 공간의 확장이 불가피 했다.
결국 이런 주변의 상황들과 건축물이 내적으로 안고 있는 물리적 한계들을 어떤 식으로 해석하여 건축적 퀄리티를 만들 것 인지가 이 프로젝트의 시작 이였고, 그 해법의 단서는 시간이 지나도 변하지 않는 건축의 요소들, 즉 이 집의 구조와 재료에서 찾아 디자인 하였다.
Transforming a house from old to new is not just about renewing materials or making a new design. It is about correctly understanding the relationship between a house and its neighborhood, as well as its architectural quality and value in a new era.
Suyu-Dong house is a typical 1980s 2 floor detached house, finished outside with red bricks and decorated inside with wallpaper, a typical material in the 1980s-1990s. By the 2000s, 90% of the neighbourhood was occupied by these red brick houses, but recently most of them have been demolished and been replaced by small apartment blocks. Suyu-Dong house is surrounded by these on three sides, with the front facing the street. The ground floor of all the apartment blocks is open parking space, which results in a privacy issue. Moreover, there is a physical spatial issue. For example, in the 1980s the house was originally planned for a family of four, but by current standards, the original kitchen area in this house was too small to accommodate even 2 people.
Based on these facts, the key to this project was to understand these conditions from the site context and physical limitations, and turn them into a new architectural quality. In the end, the solution came from the architectural elements of this house – that is, structure and materials – which have not been changed.
